I have a rather straightforward question: What is the potential cost of opening a bank account, a personal one, and a business Visa in the United States? I'm currently working at a global company that plans to set up a separate division in the US, and we need to know what legal costs we need to undertake. Any advice/tips are appreciated! A: Disclaimer: I am a banker. One advantage of the US is that the Federal Reserve is there to guarantee bank deposits. However, the size of that guarantee is capped at USD$100,000 per depositor. Banks are also legally required to do a thorough due diligence on the client and may need to see some additional documentation. All this comes at a cost, so the potential cost depends on the size of your account balance, the extent of due diligence and how much time you have to do this. Most people can make a 1,000 transaction a month (i.e. only one client a month) for free, even though banks (like RBS) may require 3-5 months for the process. So if you have a USD$10M account balance, it may be cheaper to do it yourself, maybe adding a service like AnyTrans. However, if you have USD$10M in USD and you'll be doing 20K USD a month transaction, then it is still cheaper to open a bank account. If you are opening USD for your clients, you have to create a Financial Controlling Agreement (FCA) with the US, but this is very standard and the costs are negligible. You are also required to report all transactions to the US authorities, but again, this is very common and should not be too costly to maintain. The costs for the FCA are the same for every transaction, regardless of size. So if you are really worried, consider opening a bank account with the intent to manage USD transactions and keeping USD with you at all times. A: Bank regulations will depend on the bank. Generally speaking, the average bank will charge you nothing for opening a checking account. A business account might be less flexible in terms of types of payees and/or minimum balances. There might be additional charges for ATM access, access to foreign transaction fees, international wire transfer fees, etc. If you open a US Visa What's New in the? Intel has finally announced its Thunderbolt 2.0 Specification. You can watch a video of Thunderbolt 2.0 in action here (embedded): Thunderbolt 2.0 is said to be an evolution of the USB 3.0 and will be backwards compatible with existing Thunderbolt devices. Thunderbolt 2.0 is designed to enable high-performance peripherals that can be attached to a computer via its PCI or PCIe slot. If your computer has a USB 3.0 port, just connect a Thunderbolt 2.0 device and it will work. If it has a Thunderbolt port, it should work out of the box. Thunderbolt 2.0 devices will have up to 10 Gbps of data transfer speed and 40 Gbps of peak power. They are said to be backwards compatible with USB 3.0. A variety of device categories have been mentioned by Intel, including video cards, wireless networking, industrial control, storage devices and audio devices. In many cases, wireless networking is the most common use of PCI or PCIe slots on a desktop. If you’ve been using USB 3.0 wireless adapters, you’ll be able to use a standard wireless adapter with a Thunderbolt 2.0 device that plugs into your computer via its PCI or PCIe slot. Of course, the trade-off with this approach is that you’ll need a PCI or PCIe device slot to add a Thunderbolt 2.0 device. Anytime you run out of PCI or PCIe slots, you’ll need to buy a new board for your computer. Unfortunately, Intel isn’t saying if there will be any Thunderbolt 2.0 devices out yet. It’s likely to take some time for Intel to start rolling out Thunderbolt 2.0 devices in order to test them for stability and ensure drivers are in place to support the new technology. Intel is claiming that Thunderbolt 2.0 technology will offer at least 10 times the bandwidth that USB 3.0 offers. Intel is also claiming that there will be more than 170 devices supporting Thunderbolt 2.0 already available by the end of the year. Intel has also improved the Thunderbolt 2.0 specification by including power delivery. Power delivery is said to save power by “stripping” power by 5 watts from the device. This makes it more efficient. Thunderbolt 2.0 has a power limit of 20 watts, which is the same power that USB 3.0 offers.
